In ClosingThroughout the country increasing numbers of individuals and family members with disabilities are being cared for at home. Support for the family is critical and has motivated family members and professionals to work together in new ways. These new collaborative relationships have resulted in cost effective services that respond more fully to the needs of the individual, child and family. In true partnerships, families are accepted for their ideas and experience concerning care for their loved ones; evolving from being a recipient of services to being an advisor in their family member’s care. In turn, professionals as partners begin to view service delivery through fresh eyescreating solutions hand-in-hand with family input, evolving from directors to coaches and consultants. Family and professional partnerships require the use of creative thought and tactics. We hope the strategies outlined in this manual bring to light the diverse ways families and professionals may forge these new working relationships. |
