The College Access Project for Rural Alaska (CAPRA), Center for Human Development at the University of Alaska Anchorage, funded by USDOE, Office of Post secondary Education successfully completed most of the objective set forth for this grant period (Year 2, 10/1/2006-9/30/2007). This executive summary provides information on significant events that occurred since Annual Performance Report-Year 1 submitted pm May 12, 2006.

CAPRA project staff:

Grant Implementation & Management

  1. initiated contact and planned for full participation by University of Alaska Southeast (UAS)*
  2. developed and finalized a partnership agreement/MOU with Prince William Sound Community College with campuses in Cordova, Glennallen, and Valdez.*
  3. hired Campus CAPRA Coordinator on Mat-Su Campus
  4. received approval to hire one Information Technology Specialist for each campus who is preferably a student with a documented disability
  5. facilitated several audio/video conference meetings:
    1. Advisory Board meeting (1 per semester),
    2. Budget advisory and management meeting (general-as necessary; 1 per college with grant personnel and business office representatives),
    3. Campus-Based CAPRA Coordinators or ‘CAPRA Crew’ meeting (as necessary with various representatives – Coordinators, Disability Support Services, Faculty Experts, Grant Evaluation Team, etc.),
    4. University of Washington’s DO-IT Project visit (1-initial contact; 2-planning sessions with DO-IT; 4-planning/budget sessions with Campus CAPRA Coordinators - postponed)
  6. hosted informational/status meetings for Deans/Directors of participating colleges: Kenai Peninsula College (2 campuses), Mat-Su College (1 campus), and Prince William Sound Community College (3 campuses).

Training & Technical Assistance

  1. updated or created anew and disseminated training materials in print and electronic formats (e.g., Blackboard site, CAPRA web site, DSS web site)
  2. planned and presented Facilitator Workshops for campus-based training teams (1 per semester)
  3. planned and presented site-based Faculty Workshops for adjuncts and full-time faculty (1 or 2 per participating campus)
  4. secured (purchased or received approval), disseminated and utilized materials (video, online, print, etc.) from other OPE-DD Projects
  5. submitted and received a mini-grant from Alaska’s Mental Health Trust Authority ($2000) for future training by DO-IT Project staff.

Outreach

  1. developed and disseminated CAPRA brochures and rack cards
  2. developed and populated a CAPRA web site associated with the university’s Disability Support Services web site
  3. recorded, edited, captioned and disseminated a student authored and prepared video taped invitation for faculty to attend CAPRA training on their campuses.
  4. met with local agencies (LEAs, DVRs, ILCs) to discuss CAPRA training, client transition to college, etc.
  5. attended and exhibited at statewide conferences (2)

Evaluation Activities

  1. developed, refined, and utilized evaluation instruments (each occurrence)
    • Facilitator Workshop Evaluation
    • Faculty Workshop Evaluation
    • Trained Faculty: Post-training Annual Survey (IRB approval)
    • Syllabus Checklist: Pre- & Post-training
    • Student with Documented Disability: Course Survey IRB approval)
  2. developed, refined, and utilized data collection instruments (Baseline & each semester)
    • Student Accommodation & Confidentiality Assurance Form
    • Course Completion Rate Form
  3. developed, refined, and utilized Campus CAPRA Coordinator reporting processes and procedures
    • Campus CAPRA Coordinator Report (quarterly with budget update)
    • Campus CAPRA Activities (proposed with budget projection)

NOTES:

* During Fall Semester 2006, after the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) with campuses in Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka discontinued participation in CAPRA, project staff signed a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding with Prince William Sound Community College. Ms Shedita Alston, DD Demonstration Project Officer, approved the change in participating campuses on December 21, 2006
