Welcome to the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Human Development

Two people meeting in the hall at Full Lives Conference"The Grantsmanship Course through the Center for Human Development was very helpful because it helped me to organize my thoughts and to find the right place to go to look for the grants."

Who are we?

The Center for Human Development (CHD) is one of 61 University Centers located in every state and territory, which attempts to bring together the resources of the university and the community in support of individuals with developmental disabilities.

For more than thirty years, University Centers have supported disability education, research, and service programs which positively affect the lives of individuals with disabilities, their families, and friends by increasing their independence, productivity, and community inclusion.

Formerly known as a University Affiliated Program (UAP), the Center for Human Development — now called “A University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Services (UCEDD)” — strives towards full participation of all Alaskans, including those who experience disabilities, in the communities of their choice.

What do we do?

We make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities, their families, and friends by

  • People First meetingSupporting People First self-advocates as they speak for themselves to get what they want and need.
  • Training parents through Family Resource Specialists, who are themselves parents of a child with a disability.
  • Partnering with University of Alaska in distance education, which allows students from all over the state to take courses leading to degrees with a disability emphasis.
  • Developing grantwriting skills via distance-delivered and face-to-face training workshops.
  • Offering specialized services for adolescents and adults with cognitive impairments who engage in high-risk sexual behaviors.
  • Providing training workshops in care coordination, waivers, self-determination, advocacy, self-employment, and other community based concerns.
  • Linking individuals, families, professionals, university resources, community and state agencies.

How are we funded?
